A Prayer for Making Room

A Prayer for Making Room

Heavenly Father, You are the Originator of all beings and things. The Progenitor of unity and diversity, sameness and difference. You begot the Truth, and you preserve, protect, and promote it, yet you also did make space for falsity to be a reality. Your hospitality is a mystery.

You are the Source of black and white, rocks and pebbles, knowledge and ignorance. You engender harmony from chaos and cultivate beauty in ruins. You make oppositions sit down and work it out. You even make room for Your enemies—choosing not to annihilate them.

Father, help us to make room for that which is contrary to us, as you do. Help us to create space even for our adversaries even as you have done for Satan—creating a home for him in hell. Help us to see our enemies as fellow sons and daughters of being and creatures unworthy of mercy.

Lord Jesus, You are the Word Incarnate that took on complete sameness and otherness—a Logos Creator who took on the form of one of His creatures. A divine Son who took on human flesh to become the Son of Man. You are the true and ultimate Reconciler of all sides.

Incarnate Word, help us to have the same humility as you did to take on the assumptions, push backs, challenges, and reproofs of others. Even if it’s only to sharpen our own heads and hearts. But also infuse us with a spirit of your exaltation and session—to trust your Word and boldly proclaim it.

Master, teach us when and how to speak, as you did before Pilate, and when to keep silent, as you did before Herod. When to address the crowds, and when to dismiss them. To discern the difference between those who have the eyes to see and those who do not have ears to hear, as you did.

Spirit of the Living God, You are the Translator who transcends culture and tribes. The Renewer who breathes refreshment into hardened hearts. The Bestower of Words who grants languages to an Upper Room and stitches  strangers together in a Sanctuary.

Breath of Heaven, assuage our anxieties about ignorance. Give us confidence in saying, “I don’t know” Convert our egos when we are proven wrong. Teach us to value being chiseled and sharpened by iron. Help us to find hope in receiving admonishment and delight in being rebuked.

Holy Trinity, tether us to one another despite our pride and brokenness. May we find unity with others only in You. Help us to be synchronized in our mission as You Three display in your unified activity. Make us supporters of one another, as You are. For the sake of Your reconciling work and Kingdom.

Amen.
